Checklist
Storyboard
Insert copyright into your storyboard
From Media, click on More and drag the copyright text block onto the appropriate spread. Copyright information is typically found on the left page of the first spread, opposite your title page.
Text blocks transfer from the storyboard to each spread. Move each block around as you play with text and image placement.
Find and hire a professional illustrator
Unless you're an artist or already have one, you'll need to find and hire an illustrator. You can start your search locally, via art schools and in your community, or take your search to an online platform.
Dedication and acknowledgements
If applicable, add a dedication and/or acknowledgements to the front matter of your book.
Check visual appeal for your audience
Have you offered ways for children to interact and engage further (e.g. hidden objects, patterns to recognize)? Will the illustrations evoke the intended emotional response from readers? Are the characters and settings relatable?
Review cover design (front, back, spine)
Ensure the cover conveys the tongue and genre of the book effectively. Ensure the title, author name, subtitles, and other text are visible and legible. Check that your cover illustration is engaging and eye-catching enough to stand out.
Find the right art or illustration style for your book, ensuring it matches the mood, tone, and theme of your book.
Delete empty spreads to avoid blank pages
Once your text and illustrations are in place, page turns have been added, and all back matter has been included, delete any extra spreads to avoid blank pages.
Review pacing and page distribution
Look for smooth transitions between scenes or pages. Use a variety of layouts. Ensure you’ve left adequate time and space for the story climax and resolution.
Setup
Update/confirm trim size and orientation
Did you select a trim size appropriate for your target audience and book type? Consider how the orientation affects the visual flow of the story. Will the illustrations fit within the trim size and orientation you selected? Check that your trim size is compatible with any preferred print-on-demand services you plan to use.
Have you added and selected fonts that are generally easy to read, especially for interior pages? Add and remove fonts you want to use on exterior and interior pages.
Update/confirm illustration style
Select or change the illustration style that will influence and help generate appealing placeholder images that match the illustration style of your finished book.
Add or remove specific colors you want to use in your story. Create a color palette to match your story’s theme, mood, tone, and setting. Ensure the colors work well together across multiple spreads.
Add your barcode to the back cover
Click on Media, then More. Click and drag your barcode to the back cover. You can only do this if you have obtained and entered your unique ISBN.
Add your book blurb and illustrations to your back cover. Leave space for your barcode.
Ensure the font size and style are legible, with high contrast between the background and text. Check for colorblind-friendly designs, ensuring important visual elements aren’t reliant solely on color.
Generate or import placeholder images for your storyboard
Click on Media to generate, upload, or select from thousands of pre-loaded placeholder images to use as you storyboard your book. AI-generated and stock images cannot be protected by copyright.
Add text and images to your title page
Opposite the copyright page, add your title page. Include your book title, author and illustrator names, publisher (if applicable) and an illustration (optional).
Review typography and text design
Is text placed and well integrated with illustrations? Ensure important visual details are not obstructed. Does the position of text follow the natural reading flow, especially if there are multiple blocks of text on a page? Are the fonts used for dialogue, sound effects, or special text consistent with the tone and style of the book?
Revise design and layout for optimal flow (repeat as needed)
Each time you change the placement of text blocks, illustrations, or page turns, it's a good idea to look at the whole book and how everything flows.
Are characters and settings consistent across spreads? Look at characters’ sizes, expressions, and physical details. Is the style (e.g. shading, use of color) consistent across pages, even if scenes or environments change? Is the level of detail consistent, avoiding highly detailed illustrations on one page and overly simplified ones on another?
Add your title, author name, and illustrator name to your front cover. You may use more decorative fonts and design elements here. Leave room for an intriguing illustration.
Some authors find it helpful to create a physical “book dummy” using printed text blocks and folded paper to explore options for text, illustration placement, and page turns.
Import and organize final illustrations
Import and insert all illustrations to interior pages, front and back matter, and front and back covers.
Have you used any elements in the illustrations that can add subtext, like characters in the background, hidden visual clues, or humorous details? Do the illustrations show the characters’ emotions and convey the tone of the scene without words? Are the characters’ actions clear and engaging? Have you used non-verbal cues (e.g. gestures, body language) to enhance the story?
Add elements to the back pages of your book such as an author/illustrator note, about the author, or any bonus content you’d like to include.
Planning
Plot
Start with the exposition, or the beginning of the story. This usually offers a glimpse into the main character's normal life. It should spark interest and hook readers so they want to turn the page and keep reading.
What is the climax (high point)?
This is often the lowest, darkest point for the main character. A point where all seems lost and they've all but given up. The climax paves the way for the resolution (or end), though the character doesn't usually realize it at the time.
What is the main problem or conflict?
What are the things that prevent a character from getting what they want or need? Think of conflict as roadblocks or bumps in the journey of the story that add interest and support the theme or truth the story is trying to explore.
Kids like solutions and resolutions. Plan to offer a definite and satisfying end to your story. This doesn't mean your story needs to have a happy ending, but your readers should know what happened in the end or be able to easily draw their own conclusions.
Select a common theme from the options provided or add your own. Your book's theme is the underlying message or big idea of your story. Many stories have more than one theme.
What type of book are you writing?
What type of book are you writing? This often (but not always) relates to the age or developmental level of your target audience. Common illustrated children's book type classifications include board books, picture books, early readers, graphic novels, and comic books.
Book genres focus on the subject matter of the book. Common children's book genres include fiction, nonfiction, contemporary fiction, mystery, historical fiction, fairy tale/fable/folktale, fantasy, science fiction, horror, biography/autobiography, history/biology/science, or self-help. Keep in mind that certain genres are more common or popular in some age groups than others, so it's also helpful to understand the reading level of the book.
A good picture book isn't just written, it's built. Since every word counts, it's important to think ahead about the beginning, middle, and end. Consider what you want to happen in each section. Taking the time to work through the Planning workspace will help you think before you write, ultimately helping you create a well-thought-out manuscript.
Explore book distribution options
Learn about how and where you can sell and distribute your book. Use this knowledge to start planning as you think about your book distribution plan.
Select a common tone from the options provided or type your own. The tone is closely related to mood and includes how your writing makes a reader feel or the emotion evoked by your writing.
Start here. Brainstorm and get your ideas out. Write as if you’re telling your best friend about the story you're writing. Describe major plot points, details about your characters, and anything else you want to include before you start writing the first draft of your manuscript.
Read and familiarize yourself with recently published books in your genre. Look at what publishers are doing. How do the text and images work together? Take a look at the layout, formatting, and front and back matter.
Is your book a work of fiction (made up) or non-fiction (factually-based)?
Point of View (POV) is the voice used to tell the story. First-person uses "I," "me," "we," and "us" (narrator's perspective). Second-person uses "you" (addresses the reader). Third-person limited uses names or personal pronouns she, he, they (perspective of a single main character). Third-person omniscient knows the thoughts, actions, and feelings of all characters. Third-person objective describes what's happening and doesn't show thoughts or feelings.
Add, edit, or describe the main character of your story and any supporting characters. Generate images based on your character descriptions.
Manuscript
Edit
Cut out unnecessary filler words that do not add to the story. Check that the text is as concise as possible without losing the meaning or tone of the story.
Is the dialogue realistic for the age of the characters? Does it help move the story forward or reveal something about the characters? Is it fun to read aloud?
Is the vocabulary appropriate for the target age group? Avoid using difficult words that might confuse your audience. Try to use words that are vibrant, engaging, and descriptive.
Proofread for grammar, punctuation, and spelling
Check for errors in grammar or punctuation. Checked for spelling errors and inconsistencies with capitalization. Ensure punctuation is placed to enhance the flow of the story, such as using ellipses and exclamations.
Self-edit your story structure
Is the overall story clear with a beginning, middle, and end? Does it introduce the main character and problem within the first few pages? Is the resolution at the end clear?
Does the story flow naturally? Are there moments of tension, excitement, or humor that are well-paced to maintain engagement? Does each page turn serve a purpose by either building anticipation or advancing the plot?
Does the book have a clear theme or moral that resonates with your target audience? Is the message conveyed naturally without being too preachy? Will the message be clear to your audience and align with their developmental stage?
Unless intentional, have you avoided repeating the same words or phrases? Is there any redundant information that has already been conveyed via illustrations or text?
Check for engagement opportunities
Do all pages offer opportunities for questions, discussion, thought, laughter, pointing and/or learning?
Is the language used suitable to your target age group? Are the themes and ideas simple enough to grasp, but engaging enough to hold their attention? Is there anything that might be too complex, scary, or inappropriate for the target audience?
Self-edit page count and layout
Does the story fit within a standard format for your genre (e.g. 32-page picture book format)? Does the text fit well into a page-by-page layout? Are there natural breaks that encourage page turns? Are there any parts of the story that feel too long or too short?
Have you provided clear illustration notes (while allowing room for an illustrator's artistic freedom)? Have you ensured the text leaves room for the illustrations to shine without overshadowing them?
When you read it aloud, does it have a rhythm that’s enjoyable to read, with natural breaks for emphasis or pauses? Are there any awkward words or phrases that could make it difficult to read aloud to a child?
Are sentences clear and easy to understand for your audience? Eliminate confusing or overly complex sentences. Simplify sentences, if applicable, to improve readability.
Share the self-edited manuscript with several trusted beta readers such as parents, teachers, or children who fit your target audience. Get feedback on how engaging, age-appropriate, and easy to follow the story is.
Check for dialogue punctuation
Check that you have formatted and punctuated dialogue accurately, especially around quotation marks. Ensure each speaker’s line starts a new paragraph, for clarity.
Have you left space for illustrations to tell part of the story? Have you over-explained details that can be shown in the artwork? Are there moments where text and illustrations can work together to create a richer story? Does each scene or page offer visual diversity and interest for young readers? Add imagery tags to your manuscript to plan how images and text will work together.
Is the tone consistent throughout the story? Are character names, traits, and settings consistent throughout the text? Have you used consistent tense or have you accidentally shifted between past, present, or future tense?
Is the main character relatable to the audience, with clear goals and motivations? Do the characters undergo growth or change throughout the story? Are their personalities reflected in the text and illustrations? Are their emotions easy for the audience to understand?
Transfer your manuscript to the Storyboard
Your manuscript has been fully edited and revised. You've added spread breaks and tagged it with imagery notes, comments, and character details you want to remember. Congratulations! You're ready to transfer your story to the Storyboard where you'll really see it come to life!
Read the entire story aloud to ensure it flows well and sounds natural. Pay attention to the pacing, rhythm, and any awkward phrasing. Have someone unfamiliar with the story read it aloud to see if they stumble over any parts or if the story is clear.
Use Breaks to establish page turns. Pacing is an important element of writing a successful picture book as it builds tension. Readers should feel motivated to turn every single page.
Get it all out. Write it all out as it comes. Avoid the temptation to edit just yet.
Start writing your manuscript. Don't try to make it perfect. Just write.
Tags help you to expand on and clarify aspects of your manuscript, but are not included in your total word count. Character tags to are assigned to dialogue. Imagery tags record illustration and layout ideas. Comment tags let you add any information you want to record without including it in your manuscript text.
Word count varies based on your target reader's age and book type. Establish your target word count and keep your eye on this number as you edit your manuscript. Board books: 10-300 words. Early picture books: <500 words. Picture books: 500-1000 words. Early readers: 200-3500 words (depending on age level).
Find and hire a professional editor
While not required, working with a professional editor is strongly recommended for both traditionally and self-published authors.
Project

Children’s book blurbs should be 100 words or less. Make it descriptive, using vivid details that appeal to the book’s audience.

Write a short bio using third-person language. It should be interesting, relevant, and Informative. Show your credibility. Be concise, breaking up large blocks of text.
Write a short summary of your book. Be concise and make every word count, aiming for no more than 200 words for a children's book. You can update the book summary at any time by navigating to the Project Settings tab in the vertical menu on the left side of your screen.
Establish your own publishing company
